Flag
The national flag of Algeria consists of two stripes of equal width. The stripes are vertical bars that have green and white color. At the center of the flag, there is a red crescent surrounding a five-pointed star. The flag was adopted on 3 July 1962 when Angola gained independence from France. The inspiration for the flag came from the flag of National Liberation Front in the Algerian War of Independence from 1954 through 1962. The Green color traditionally represents Islam, the White color stands for purity, the red color is for the blood of those who fought to liberate the country from French oppression. The star and crescent represent Islam. It should be noted that the crescent was taken from the Turkish flag

Culture
Algeria has a number of fine museums, most of which are located in the capital and are administered by the Office of Cultural Heritage (1901). The National Museum of Antiquities (1897) displays artifacts dating from the Roman and Islamic periods. The National Fine Arts Museum of Algiers (1930) houses statues and paintings, including some lesser works of well-known European masters, and the Bardo Museum (1930) specializes in history and ethnography. Most other cultural institutions also are found in Algiers, including the National Archives of Algeria (1971), the National Library (1835), and the Algerian Historical Society (1963).

Interesting Facts
The country’s name derives from the city of Algiers which in turn derives from the Arabic al-Jazāʾir (الجزائر, “The Islands”), a truncated form of the older Jazāʾir Banī Mazghanna (جزائر بني مزغنة, “Islands of the Mazghanna Tribe”), employed by medieval geographers such as al-Idrisi.
